Book and Movie Club

This club is currently seeking new co-chairs. If you are an AWIS-SD member and wish to lead this program, contact the AWIS-SD president.

The AWIS Book and Movie Club is a group that welcomes women and men, both AWIS members and non-members, for the purposes of getting together once a month to informally discuss a book that we have selected, or to watch a movie and discuss what we have seen. The purposes of the club are:

  • To expand literary horizons

  • To watch independent and mainstream films that may be theaters or to catch up on ones that are available on DVD

  • To engage in enlightening discussion

  • To socialize and meet others

  • To network, to eat and to have fun.

We alternate book and movie meetings every other month. At each meeting we review the book chosen from the previous meeting, choose the next book to read, get a volunteer to write an article about the next book for the AWIS newsletter, and decide on the date for the next meeting. Each volunteer, upon completion of writing an article, will be reimbursed the cost of the book. Everyone is welcome even if you haven't finished the book. We discuss general ideas that arise from our discussion, and everyone can help decide what to read next.

When and Where:
Movie Meetings can occur at the theater, which is usually the Landmark in La Jolla . If we watch the film at the theater, we usually retire to a nearby café afterwards to discuss the film. If we watch a DVD or video, we can meet at someone's house and discuss afterward (food is provided!).
