| Jenny Chaplin received her education at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa. She has held positions in biotech both in South Africa and locally. Currently Jenny is an Associate Director at Vical, where she is active in project management. She has held positions in various AWIS-SD committees since joining in 2003, including Corporate Sponsorship and PR and was co-chair for the WIB 2007 Speakers Committee. Secretary: Cindy Atwell |
| Cindy Atwell received her Bachelor degree in Biochemistry & Molecular Biology from the Pennsylvania State University. She then worked for 4 years as a Research Associate at 2 different start-up biotechnology companies before going back to school to obtain an MBA from the Rady School of Management at UC San Diego. She is currently still working in the pharmaceutical field as a Business Development Analyst at Amylin Pharmaceuticals Inc. Cindy has been involved with the San Diego AWIS chapter since 2003, and she has served recently as co-chair of the Events committee. She was also a part of the WIB 2007 committee. Email her by

Treasurer:
Karin Zeh, Ph.D. |
| Karin Zeh, Ph.D., RAC received her Ph.D. in Biology from the University of Heidelberg in Germany before accepting a Postdoctoral position at The Burnham Institute in San Diego. There her research was supported by grants from the German Research Foundation, the American Heart Association and the BRCP. She then worked at several biotechnology companies in and outside of San Diego as a Research Scientist before taking a position as Project Manager. She now holds the position as Director, Project Management at SGX Pharmaceuticals.
An active AWIS member since 2001, she was a founding member of the Strategy Sessions workshop series and served on this committee as Co-Chair. Karin has served on the AWIS-San Diego Board as Secretary prior to becoming Chapter President in 2006. During her term as President she co-chaired the 2007 Women in bioScience conference. Huong Huynh, Ph.D. |
Huong Huynh is the Program Coordinator in the Office of Postdoctoral and Graduate Training at the Burnham Institute for Medical Research (La Jolla, CA) since 2004. In this capacity, she is responsible for professional and career development training of postdoctoral scientists and graduate students. She started this administrative position after completing 3 1/2 years of postdoctoral training, studying the localization and role of a novel, intracellular protein tyrosine phosphatase. Huong received her PhD in pharmacology from Loma Linda University.
Huong was the founding president of the Student Chapter of the American Society of Pharmaceutical and Experimental Therapeutics (ASPET) Society. She is a charter member and has served as Treasurer/Executive Board member of the National Postdoctoral Association. She remains an active member of American Association for Cancer Research (AACR), National Postdoctoral Association (NPA), Burnham Science Network (Burnham Institute’s postdoc association), Sigma Xi, and the Association of Women in Science (AWIS) – San Diego chapter.
As an AWIS-SD member, Huong is active in the Public Relations and Membership Committees, and 2008 Gala Committee, and was Co-Chair of the 2007 Women in bioScience Conference. Email.

Member at Large: Siobhan Malany, Ph.D. |
| Siobhan received her Ph.D. degree in physical organic chemistry from the University of Iowa where she characterized inhibitors of the enzyme, acetylcholinesterase, an important target in Alzheimer’s disease. Continuing her studies on proteins involved in neurotransmission, Siobhan joined the pharmacology department at UCSD as a postdoctoral candidate. She was recipient of an Alexander von Humboldt fellowship and spent 18 months in Frankfurt, Germany at the Max-Planck Institute for Brain Research before returning to San Diego and entering the biotech industry in 2002. Siobhan has worked at Structural Bioinformatics and Neurocrine Biosciences, the latter where she led pharmacology efforts to advance drug candidates with potential treatment for Parkinson’s disease. She enjoys traveling, writing and cycling and most of all playing with her young son. Siobhan has been an active writer and editor for the AWIS-SD newsletter since 2003.

Member at Large: Rachel Soloff, Ph.D. |
| Rachel Soloff received her B.A. in Biology from Austin College in Sherman, Texas and her Ph.D. in Microbiology and Immunology from the Louisiana Health Science Center, Shreveport, LA in 1995. Her thesis research focused on the pre-thymic development of T lymphocytes. Rachel moved to San Diego to do a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of California, San Diego with Stephen Hedrick, Ph.D., where she worked on signaling during T cell development. She is currently Immunology Group Leader at Kirin Pharma USA, Inc., a subsidiary of Kirin Pharma Co., Ltd. whose main focus is the development of novel antibody therapeutics for autoimmune and inflammatory diseases. Rachel is a member of the American Association of Immunologists. She has been a member of AWIS-SD since 2000 and served on the WIB 2005 and 2007 organizing committees as a member then Chair of the Publications Committee. Email |
