Facts About SD AWIS

AWIS-San Diego was established in 1986 by Donna Simmons and Jane Hoover-Plow. This chapter currently has over 300 active members. The organization is currently growing at a rate of about 40 members per year.

AWIS-San Diego members include women at many different career levels--from students to entrance-level technicians to Ph D. scientists to company CEO's.

Our two big events are Events/The Women in Bioscience Conference and the Events/Gala. The WIB conferences were started in 1993 and occur bi-annually. They promote networking among women scientists and science professionals at all levels. The Gala is a fundraiser for scholarships which are awarded to students who want to pursue a career in science. It was started in 1998 and occurs bi-annually.

Members can be active in the AWIS-San Diego chapter by helping to plan the WIB conferences or Gala or by attending one of our monthly events or by joining another committee. Each month the Events committee plans a program that is either social or informative for all members to attend. There is also the Book Club which is a purely social committee that allows you to meet other people in a more intimate setting and discuss books. The Education/Outreach committee is dedicated to nurturing and educating girls and young women interested in science through mentoring, providing scholarships, holding science exhibitions and much more. The Newsletter committee provides our members every other month with an up-to-date newsletter that contains information on current events, chapter news, local companies, advancements in technology, member profiles and more.

AWIS-San Diego receives a small portion of it operating funds through membership fees. The remainder of the operating funds and scholarship funds are received from generous donations from the San Diego community.

If you have questions about a particular committee, please contact that committee's chair person. Or for general questions please contact the membership chair Susan Jennings (sdawis@san.rr.com). Our organization works through the efforts of all our members. Be active!
