the new AWIS SD site. Board Member Biographies President: Janet White Janet received her Bachelors degree in Chemistry from Cambridge University in the UK. She then worked for almost ten years as a chemist in SmithKline Beecham Pharmaceuticals R&D before completing her MBA degree and switching to a career in management consulting within the pharmaceutical industry. She is currently Senior Director of Business Operations for Development at Pfizer's R&D Center in La Jolla. Janet became Chapter President in January 2004 and has been active in AWIS since 2001, first as a speaker and President Elect for the Central Jersey Chapter, then in AWIS San Diego as chair of the 2003 WIB Conference Fundraising Subcommittee and an active member of the Strategy Session and Outreach Committees. Janet also currently chairs the Database Committee and co-chairs the Women in bioScience Planning Committee. E-mail her at: janetwhite99@hotmail.com Back to top Vice President: Karin Lucas, Ph.D. Karin received her BS in Biochemistry from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo and her Ph.D. from UCSD in the Edward Dennis laboratory where she studied the role of phospholipase A2 in spinally mediated hyperalgesia. Karin joined AWIS in March of 2002. She chaired the PR committee for the 2003 Women In Bioscience conference and was the chair of the membership committee. Karin was selected as the 2003 AWIS Rookie of the Year for her work with the organization. In addition to her interest in science Karin is also an avid recreational athelete and enjoys spending time biking, skiing, boogy boarding and playing volleyball. During the winter months she works part time as a ski instructor at Snow Valley in San Bernadino. E-mail her at: karinlucas@cox.net Back to top Treasurer: Kathleen Ogilvie, Ph.D. Kathy received her Ph.D. in Biological Sciences from the University of Delaware in 1994. She continued her training in neuroendocrinology with Dr. Catherine Rivier at the Salk Institute. Presently, she is employed as a Senior Scientist at Pfizer, La Jolla, where she is responsible for screening and characterizing candidate therapeutic compounds in models of type 2 diabetes and obesity. E-mail her at: myersogilvie@cox.net Back to top Secretary: Karin Zeh, Ph.D. Karin received her Ph.D. in biology from the University of Heidelberg in Germany before accepting a Postdoctoral position at The Burnham Institute in San Diego. After working as a Scientist for biotechnology companies in and outside of San Diego she now holds a position as a Project Manager in Drug Development at a local start-up company. Karin is Co-Chair of the WIB Speaker Committee and an active member of the Cooperate Sponsorship Committee. She was a founding member of the Strategy Sessions workshop series and most recently served on this committee as Co-Chair. Karin serves on the San Diego AWIS Board as the Secretary. Past President: Anna-Maria Hays, Ph.D Anna-Maria obtained her B.A. in Biology and German at Emory and Henry College in 1994 and her Ph.D. in Biochemistry from University of California, Riverside in 1999. Her doctoral research focused on the area of proton-coupled electron transfer events in Photosystem II. As an NIH postdoctoral fellow at the Scripps Research Institute and the California Institute of Technology, her project focused on the design and synthesis substrate-linked sensitizers to probe native and engineered metalloenzymes. Currently, she is working as a staff scientist at Ambrx, focusing on the site-specific insertion of engineered amino acids for the biosynthesis of proteins with new physical, chemical, and pharmacological properties A member of AWIS since 2000, she began as Outreach and Scholarship Committee Chairperson, as well as Fundraising Chair of the 2002 AWIS Gala. She successfully co-chaired the 2003 Women in Bioscience Conference and was President of AWIS-SD during the 2002/2003 term. Under Dr. Hays' presidency, the AWIS-SD committee chairs and board have established the Strategy Sessions, an annual Open House, a remodeled Membership/PR Committee, the AWIS database and website, and established new liaisons with local companies, all of which has contributed to the highest increase in AWIS membership since SD-AWIS has been established E-mail her at: haysamiam@yahoo.com Back to top Board Member : Fan-Li Chou, Ph.D. Fan-Li received her B.S. at Penn State University and her Ph. D. in Molecular Genetics at the University of Pittsburgh. She is currently an American Heart Association post-doctoral fellow at UCSD. Fan-Li has served for several years on the AWIS-SD Events committee. She was recently elected to the AWIS-SD Board. E-mail her at: fanlichou@yahoo.com Back to top Board Member : Graciella (Gras) Beyers, Ph.D. Back to top Board Member : Sheela Talwalker, Ph.D. Sheela received her Ph.D. in mathematical statistics from McGill University (Canada) and has published over 35 research articles, 25 abstracts and reviews of many articles and books in reputed journals. She is, at present, a member of the editorial board of 'Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods'. She is 'President Elect' of the San Diego chapter of American Statistical Association. She served the drug industry for over 20 years in many different positions, such as Head of the Statistics Department, Director of Biostatistics in Clinical Research and Senior Director of Biometrics and worked in the areas of Infective Diseases, CNS Disorders including Alzheimers Disease in particular, Arthritis and Pain Management. She has extensive experience of interacting with regulatory agencies in USA and in Europe and has done strategic planning of drug development. Sheela is currently Chief Scientific Officer of TWalker Consulting. She would like to run a survey among the AWIS members to learn more about the challenges faced by them in achieving their goals and find out how AWIS can help. She would also like to invite officers from companies where management has changed the environment so that women and mothers are more productive and gender discrimination is reduced.
