March 16: Greater San Diego Science and Engineering Fair
April 2, 2005: Expanding Your Horizons

Greater San Diego Science and Engineering Fair
This year, AWIS will be presenting six awards at the San Diego Science Fair. We will present four junior division awards and two senior division awards. AWIS members will be judging a wide variety of girls’ projects to determine who will receive the AWIS awards. This is an opportunity to interact with some really neat young scientific ladies. One of last year’s junior division AWIS award recipients, Shannon McClintock, took her award winning project, "The Little Engine that Could: Enhancing Traction Through Friction," to the Discovery Channel Young Scientist Challenge and WON this nation wide competition. She was named "American’s Top Young Scientist of the Year." If you are interested in judging the science fair competition this year, please contact the outreach committee at
outreach_awissd@yahoo.com by March 1st. The judging will take place on Wednesday, March 16 and will be a half-day time commitment.

Expanding Your Horizons (EYH) Conference
Planning for San Diego's third annual Expanding Your Horizons (EYH) Conference at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) on Saturday, April 2, 2005 is well underway. The conference is aimed at girls in grades 6-10 and is intended to encourage them to pursue science, math or engineering. AWIS-SD has led hands-on workshops at this conference in the past two years and we are looking for volunteers to lead workshops again in 2005. Jodi Connolly, an AWIS member and former Outreach Committee Chair is co-Chairing the EYH Program Committee and would love to hear from you if you have an idea for a workshop or would like to volunteer to help on the day. Contact Jodi at

BE WiSE is an organization designed to encourage young women to pursue careers in science and engineering through various events. For seventh and eighth grade there are overnight events at various locations in town, such as Birch Aquarium and Sea World. For BE WiSE alumni who are in high school there are two Saturday events where women who are in the scientific and engineering fields are there to talk about science and encourage the young women to consider a career in the scientific and engineering fields.
